Cycle to work? On your bike!

Posted in Latest News on 15 Jun 2015

This week marks the start of Bike Week – the biggest nationwide cycling event in the UK aimed at encouraging people to give cycling a go whilst promoting the social, health and environmental benefits that it brings. With hundreds of events planned around the country, the event is designed to inspire people to dust of their bikes, don their helmets, and get out and about; whether that’s just for fun or for part of their daily commute.

In fact, this year’s Bike Week has a special focus and will encourage people to use their bikes to cycle to work, and take part in ‘buddy’ rides with colleagues, scope out the easiest route to their place of work or take part in work place challenges.

Every year in our Salary and Benefits Benchmarking Survey we ask legal professionals up and down the country about their commute as links can often be made between this and general satisfaction in the workplace.

Out of the 2,000 respondents only 2% told us they use their bikes to get to work, with the majority of these working in London. With an average commute of 43 minutes each way it’s perhaps not surprising that lawyers are opting for cars or public transport, although a handful of die-hard enthusiasts did concede that they cycle for an hour each way before hitting the office. And, our data indicates that those that cycled to work are a happy bunch too…with over 65% satisfied or very satisfied in the workplace.

With milder and sunnier days upon us at last, Bike Week certainly seems like a good reason to give cycling a go, even if it’s just to avoid the daily commute on hot and packed trains and buses over the next week or so!
