Graduates Leaving Law Firms at the Altar

Posted in Latest News on 26 Nov 2015

1 in 5 legal graduate job offers are turned down according to a survey released by the Association of Graduate Recruiters.

On average 14.4% of all graduate job offers are turned down but indicative of the more intense competition in the sectors law firms reported that 20.6% of their offers were turned down, second only to the IT and Telecoms sector which recorded 22%.

One employer confirmed that they had “an increase in offers that were declined by graduates quite late in the recruitment cycle” while another mentioned a change in candidate behaviour with graduates holding a couple of offers and deciding late in the cycle.

And it seems work experience and legal internships do work for graduates looking for a legal career. Law firms reported that 56.4% of vacancies were filled by graduates who had previously worked for them in some capacity, way in front of the next best consulting and business services firms at 38% and FMCG companies at 36.6%.  On average 26.5% of vacancies were filled this way across all sectors with some businesses reporting that they filled all of their vacancies this way.
